Chapter Seven

We waited out front for the valet to bring our car to us. The night had cooled off, the sky an inky blue with big, bright stars hanging low. People arrived looking excited.

“How was it?” asked a young woman clinging to her man’s arm.

“Fantastic,” I said as Jackson slipped his arm around me. I smelled tuberose in the lush garden out front and it stirred my senses. I reached up to Jackson for a kiss. Lucas nudged me and gave me a kiss, too. I was shocked at first, then totally turned on.

My cock hardened instantly. What a thrill this was. The valet gave us a sidelong glance, but from his cheeky grin, I guessed, like ninety-percent of San Francisco males, that he was gay.

“We need to stop by Foster’s diner for a few minutes. He’s got some paperwork for me to look over,” I said, feeling a bit of a thrill at the looks of disappointment on Lucas’s and Jackson’s faces.

“Okay, but we can’t stay long. We have a full evening ahead of us.” Jackson shared a knowing smile with Lucas.

We were all silent on the car ride over. Even Lucas managed to keep his yap shut for once as he sat in the backseat.

Once we got there, I was shocked to see the closed sign up, but I could see Foster inside working a broom.

“This place is so cool,” Lucas observed as we got out of the car.

Yeah, I just hoped I could figure out a way for Foster to keep it.

Foster was so absorbed in sweeping that when I knocked, he jumped so high, he almost dropped the broom. Putting a hand to his chest, he gave us a weak smile before he came to unlock the door.

“Sorry to bust in on you so late, but I thought I’d pick up that paperwork since we were already out,” I apologized as he let us in.

“No problem, you just surprised me is all. I’m not used to closing up except on Christmas and my mom’s birthday, but I’ve been on my own. I’m a little burned out and needed a little break.” Foster went behind the counter and grabbed the papers.

“What happened to your help?” Jackson asked as he looked around the empty restaurant.

Foster gave a disgusted snort. “That would be Alan. Bastard was a no call, no show today. It’s because of him that I had to close tonight.”

“He’s an idiot. I would love working here.” Lucas ran his fingers over the countertop, just as he’d done on his previous visit to the diner. His touch almost like a lover’s caress. A small look of awe was in his eyes as he drank in all the surroundings.

“You really like it that much?” Foster gave the first genuine smile I’d seen from him in a long time.

“Yeah, it reminds me of a soda shop that I used to go to as a kid.”

“Soda shop?” Foster echoed. “Where did you live?”

“A small town in Michigan called Holly. There used to be this little store downtown that was a combination soda shop and pharmacy.
